Netflix UK Subscription Guide 2023

Post updated: June 24, 2023

What is Netflix?

Netflix, Inc. is an American subscription streaming service and production company. Launched on August 29, 1997, it offers a film and television series library through distribution deals and its productions, known as Netflix Originals.

What do you get with your Netflix subscription?

You can watch Netflix through any internet-connected device that offers the Netflix app, including smart TVs, game consoles, streaming media players, set-top boxes, smartphones, and tablets. You can also watch Netflix on your computer using an internet browser.

Is Netflix worth it?

Recently, Netflix has seen more competition with, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, just to name a few. But there is no other on-demand streaming service that is as well-rounded as Netflix. You’ll find great movies and series, incredible original content, and a sleek interface on Netflix.

Let’s take prime, for example, Prime undoubtedly offers its members a lot of perks. If you use Prime Video to watch films and Amazon Music Prime to listen to your favourite tunes, this could alone make Prime worth more than Netflix as you get an all-in-one service.

Prime Video however doesn’t have the same number of quality shows as Netflix. But a single Prime subscription works out cheaper than having a Netflix and Spotify subscription. So it may be worth getting Prime if you want the video and music service you subscribe to for a fraction of the cost.

Netflix is generally considered fair value for money, but it really depends on how much you use the services that it provides.

How much does Netflix cost in the UK?

Netflix currently offers three pricing plans, each of which have a monthly payment:

Basic: £6.99 (Good video quality in SD (480p). Watch on any phone, tablet, computer or TV.)

Standard: £10.99 (Great video quality in Full HD (1080p). Watch on any phone, tablet, computer or TV.)

Premium: £15.99 (Their best video quality in Ultra HD (4K) and HDR. Watch on any phone, tablet, computer or TV.)

You can check which payment plan you’re on – and change it – in your account settings.

There are restrictions based on the plan you opt for. Only people who live with you may use your account. Watch on four different devices at the same time with Premium, 2 with Standard and 1 with Basic.

Can you get Netflix for free?

The simple answer is no.

Netflix stopped offering a 30-day free trial in December 2019.

How do you subscribe to Netflix?

  1. Visit the Netflix sign on page
  2. Enter your email and set up a password
  3. Choose the plan that works for you (Basic, Standard, Premium). Please note Premium is the default plan so make sure this is right for you
  4. Click next, and add a payment method

And that’s it!

Note that this process may vary slightly if you sign up to Netflix using another device such as a smart TV.

How do you renew Netflix correctly?

By default, your Netflix subscription will automatically renew at the end of every month.

But automatic renewal could leave you paying more than you’d like if Netflix raises the cost or you stop using Netflix’s services.

The only way to turn off auto-renewal is to cancel your subscription altogether. However, using a service like ScribePay can alert you in advance of any price rises, and remind you that your Netflix subscription is ongoing.

How can ScribePay alert you if your Netflix subscription changes?

The ScribePay app is smart.

When you add a subscription or take out a subscription using the ScribePay virtual card, the app will keep track of:

  • the cost of the subscription
  • the date when the subscription new renews
  • how often the subscription is billed
  • how long the subscription is due to last
  • the date when the subscription is due to end

ScribePay also keeps track of the subscription service itself, including any future price changes.

With all this information, ScribePay will alert you as soon as it’s aware that the cost of your subscription is due to change. This means that you’ll have plenty of time to decide whether you want to continue, change or cancel the subscription.

How does Netflix free trial work?

Netflix stopped offering a 30-day free trial in December 2019. So if you want to access any of the content you need to pay one of the monthly fees. If you are not too sure about how much of the service you will use, you can start with the Basic plan and upgrade to standard or premium once you are sure about how you intend on using the service.

Can Netflix be shared?

This depends on the plan you are on. The Basic Plan is meant for just one device. If you are on the standard plan, you can share with up to two devices in a household. If on the premium plan, you can share with up to 4 devices in a household.

Please note: for accounts that are sharing a password across addresses, Netflix is charging an additional fee to add “sub accounts” for up to two people outside the home.

Does Netflix offer a membership plan for students?

Netflix does not currently offer a student discount on its monthly subscription.

However, there are other streaming services that offer student discounts if that is of interest. Check out our subscription guide on Amazon prime video.

Does Netflix offer a membership plan for businesses?

Netflix is not licensed for commercial use. So the simple answer is no!

How do you cancel Netflix?

To cancel Netflix;

  1. Visit the Netflix account settings
  2. Click the ‘Cancel membership’
  3. Click “finish cancelation’

Cancelling your Netflix subscription is easy. However, if you are likely to forget to cancel before the next monthly auto-renewal kicks in, ScribePay will alert you 3 days and 1 day before. You can then stop the payment in the app which will automatically pause the subscription.

How do you check your Netflix subscription’s last day?

To check your Netflix subscription last day:

  1. Visit the Netflix account settings
  2. Click the ‘Account billing’

How do you cancel your Netflix subscription if you don’t know the email address?

It’s still possible to cancel your Netflix subscription if you don’t know the email address that’s associated with your Netflix account. But it may involve some guesswork.

The first option:

  1. Visit Netflix sign-up page
  2. Enter an email address you think you used to create your Netflix account
  3. If it’s incorrect, Netflix will respond with the message ‘We cannot find an account with that e-mail address’
  4. Try another email address until Netflix recognises it and asks for your password

The second option:

  1. Visit your email inbox (Gmail, Mail, etc)
  2. Search for ‘Netflix.com’
  3. If you see emails from Netflix then visit Netflix’s sign in page and log in using that email address
  4. If you don’t see emails from Netflix, try searching for ‘Netflix’ using another email account

The third (and easiest) option:

If you signed up to Netflix using ScribePay, you can stop the payment in just a few clicks of the ScribePay app – even if you’ve forgotten your Netflix email address.

  1. Open the ScribePay app
  2. Select Netflix subscription
  3. Select cancel subscription and thats it!
  4. Payment will be blocked (if you change your mind you can always unblock it)

Will Netflix Refund your money?

The simple answer is no. Netflix will just not take another monthly subscription payment. So if you forget to cancel in time, you will still have to use the service until the next month the auto-renewal is due. The only way to turn off auto-renewal is to cancel your subscription altogether. However, using a service like ScribePay can alert you in advance, and remind you that your Netflix subscription is ongoing.

Can you cancel Netflix anytime?

Yes, you can cancel Netflix at any time.

You can also cancel at any time in just a few taps using the ScribePay app.
