Amazon Prime UK Subscription Guide 2023

Post updated: June 23, 2023

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is the online retailer’s paid-for subscription service. Its main draw is that its members get free next-day delivery on thousands of eligible items. It also includes a range of other services including the popular Prime Video service, featuring exclusive access to hit shows like Fleabag and The Grand Tour. Amazon Prime launched in the UK in 2007.

What do you get with your Amazon Prime subscription?

In the UK, Amazon Prime members receive a wide range of benefits and other exclusive discounts and deals included in their subscription.

  • Unlimited one-day delivery (on most items)
  • Unlimited same-day delivery (in some residential areas)
  • Amazon Prime Video channels (thousands of free films and TV shows)
  • Amazon Music Prime* (millions of free songs)
  • Prime Reading (thousands of free Kindle ebooks, magazines and comics)
  • Amazon First Reads (one free new Kindle ebook release a month)
  • Prime Gaming (exclusive game content and a Twitch channel subscription)
  • Prime Photos (unlimited photo storage)
  • Lightning Deals (early access to daily product deals)
  • Same-day grocery delivery (from Amazon Fresh and Morrisons)

*Note that Amazon Prime Music is a limited version of Amazon Music Unlimited, a premium subscription service offering 30 million songs (vs 2 million offered by Amazon Music Prime) and HD audio (vs SD audio).

How does Amazon Prime membership work?

When you sign up for Amazon Prime membership, you’ll immediately get access to all the Amazon Prime features and services, including free shipping, free same-day delivery, Prime Video, Prime music and more.

  • Not every item on Amazon is eligible for free delivery, so make sure the ‘All Prime’ button to the left of the product search page is checked if you want to see eligible products only.
  • Not every film and TV series is free on Prime Video, so look for the ‘prime’ logo to see which videos are free. Paid content will show a ‘£’ symbol on the thumbnail.
  • You could grab a bargain on Amazon Prime Day, which is an annual event exclusively for Prime members where thousands of products are heavily discounted (but watch out – not every deal is cheaper than other stores).

Amazon Prime is a well-developed product that can do some nifty things for prime members:

  • Order items with your voice, using your Alexa-enabled smart speaker.
  • Watch Prime Video on a range of devices, including your mobile phone, a smart TV or any screen connected to the Fire TV Stick.

Share your Prime Video account with up to five family members or friends, by setting them up with their own profile.

How does Amazon Prime’s free trial work?

Amazon Prime’s free 30-day trial is available to all current non-Prime Amazon customers. It offers the same full benefits and exclusive deals as Amazon Prime.

If you don’t have an Amazon account, you can create one during the process of signing up to Amazon Prime.

The trial lasts for 30 days and will automatically renew onto a paid monthly subscription unless it’s cancelled within 30 days.

Is Amazon Prime worth it? The benefits of Amazon Prime (UK).

Amazon Prime undoubtedly offers its members a lot of perks. But whether or not it’s worth it for you to become a Prime member will depend on whether you use these Amazon Prime benefits and perks.

If you only use Amazon for shopping, you’ll need to shop several times a month for the Prime subscription fee to cover the amount you’d have otherwise spent on the shipping costs.

If you use Prime Video to watch films and Amazon Music Prime to listen to your favourite tunes, this could alone be worth the Prime subscription fee.

Prime Video doesn’t have the same number of quality shows as Netflix. And Amazon Music Prime doesn’t have the same number of songs as Spotify (or even Amazon Music Premium).

But a single Prime subscription works out cheaper than having a Netflix and Spotify subscription. So it may be worth getting Prime if it’s the only video streaming and music streaming service that you subscribe to.

Amazon Prime is generally considered fair value for money, but it really depends on how much you use all the benefits and services that it provides.

How much does Amazon Prime cost in the UK?

Currently, the Amazon Prime subscription cost (UK) is £8.99 a month.

It also costs £95 per year, saving you £12.88.

Amazon is currently offering a 30-day free trial, after which you’ll pay £8.99 a month.

Students currently get a 50% discount on an Amazon Prime subscription as well as a six-month free trial.

How much is Amazon Prime student in the UK?

Can you get Amazon Prime for free?

With ScribePay, you could save money on all your subscription and other streaming services too, including Amazon Prime.

ScribePay helps you track all of your subscriptions, including Amazon Prime. You can now get the 30-day free Amazon Prime trial and we’ll track it for you.

Amazon also has a habit of making it unclear when it attempts to auto-enrol you into their other paid services. For example, you might receive a free three-month trial of Amazon Music Premium – if you use a regular credit or debit card you might not realise when that trial ends and Amazon moves you onto the paid plan.

By subscribing with ScribePay, we’ll alert you to the coming charge and give you the option to approve or decline.

Should you pay for Amazon Prime monthly or yearly?

The current monthly fee for Amazon Prime membership is £8.99 (after your month free with a free trial), where the annual fee is £95.

If you opted to pay monthly for Amazon prime for a year as opposed to paying a one-time fee it would mean you are spending £107.88 over the course of the next 12 months. In order to get the best value for money it could be worth making a larger initial purchase and getting Prime Annual.

If however, you feel you might not use all of the benefits offered to Prime members over a year, or need longer to decide whether an Amazon Prime account would be something worth you having, taking it month by month could be the better decision for you.
