3D Secure Payments and Subscriptions

At ScribePay, security is a priority and your account comes with a number of features to keep your money safe—in our intuitive and easy-to-use app. The way to make online card payments has changed due to an EU regulation called PSD2. Here’s what you need to know, what to expect, and how we take this further at ScribePay as Subscriptions is not covered in this new regulation.

What is PSD2, and why does it matter?

The Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) Is the EU legislation for electronic payments that aims to make online card payments more secure in Europe. This include measures the banks and business must adhere to keep your personal data (including bank account) safe and protected from fraud. The Revised Payment Services Directive now requires two-factor authentication or 3D security when making an online card payment.

How does it work?

Prior to the implementation of this regulation, when making an online payment all that was required was the 16-digit card number, expiry date, and CVV2 number to make a Payment. However, this enabled online fraud and extra measures were required to keep your money safe. So what’s changed? when you make an online payment, you will need to follow the process above but in addition, will be required to confirm your online payments with two-factor authentication.

If you’re a ScribePay Premium customer, two-factor authentication is likely already a familiar process if you’ve ever made a purchase online or subscribed for a service the first time using your ScribePay Virtual Mastercard.

As a reminder, it goes like this:

You tap the card in the app to release your virtual card to pay something online or a subscription. If 3D is enabled at the merchant side you will be prompted to input a one-time passcode. Open your ScribePay app and the code should appear immediately. Simply copy that into the checkout and this verifies the transaction… Easy!

3-D Secure Payments

Does 3D secure cover subscription payments?

The simple answer is no. When you make a subscription payment for the first time, this is treated as a normal online transaction and if 3D secure is enabled you will get the one-time code to enable that payment (including free trials). However, with subscriptions, there is something called continuous payment authorisation. This is where the merchant can continue to charge the card for a subscription until you tell them to stop. However, cancelling subscriptions is not as easy as it seems and millions of customers lose on average £300 a year from unwanted subscriptions.
